 Don’t Blink – Christmas Edition

If you do (blink, that is), you might miss it.

I was just discussing with my wife that it seemed like Halloween was just last week. What happened to November?  I don’t know if it is my old age, or having 2 kids:  one in high school with basketball season starting and one in elementary with all her extracurriculars, or the space/time continuum is really accelerating; I feel that if I blink, I’m going to miss quite a bit.

So, my apologies that this month’s newsletter is a little late and may seem a little rushed.  Hopefully it is still as enjoyable as always and you get some time to relax and enjoy the articles in between all the Holiday madness.  Thank you so much for being a part of this endeavor and I look forward to sharing all the new, exciting, and interesting happenings at Patio World in 2025.

Take care and  Have a Great Holiday Season!

(WBR) Wayne’s Book Review

My New Year’s Resolution / Goal for the year is to read one book a month.  And aren’t you lucky – You get a rare glimpse into the mind of Wayne Romain and his take on said book.  Just so you know, I’m not a reader.  In the last 10 years, I have probably read six or seven books at the most.  No literary giant here, but like a lot of things in life, you get outside your element, do things you don’t normally do, and you might learn something.

What does this have to do with the outdoors?  Maybe nothing.  Maybe a lot. But it does represent another pastime that we can enjoy (or muddle through) in The Outdoors.

This month’s book:

Arizona Argonauts

by H Bedford Jones

Book Overview

Arizona Argonauts, a 1920 western novel, was written by the self-proclaimed “King of the Pulps,” H. Bedford-Jones.  He is considered one of the most prolific pulp magazine writers of all time.

The novel incorporates some of the author’s favorite subjects:  history, adventure fantasy, crime, and Western fiction all-encompassing a sort of “Lost World”.  This one being Two Palms, a dead-end and dying mining town on the edge of the Arizona desert during the 1920s.  The story follows the path of the few old and incumbered inhabitants of this borough and what transpires when 5 “newcomers”, each one, cut from an extremely different cloth, take residence and make these environs their own.

There is much treachery, double crossing, and hidden agendas that cross from these disparate characters.  Each trying to win some sort of advantage while at the same time escaping or trying to make amends with one’s sordid past.  The newcomers include a well-known surgeon escaping his fall from grace, a couple of criminal delinquents evading the law, and a very wealthy San Francisco businessman’s attempt to find the solution to his debilitating addiction to opium.  An interesting tale indeed and written in the prose of the time.  Which means if you are easily offended by off colored or stereotypical racial language, take heed.

Short and sweet.  Perfect novel for me during the Holiday crunch.  Just about a 4-hour read and entertaining to boot!

On a scale of 1-10, I’d give it a 7.

Note: This is my unprofessional, biased, informal review. I make no claims and receive no money or support for my reviews.  It’s just an extrapolation from the mind of WR.

La Última Palabra (The Last Word)

“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.”

— John Steinbeck
