Life, Lived Better – Outdoors

 Autumn Delights

I love this time of year when the weather cools, the sun sets a little earlier (my firepit ignites sooner), and the mosquitos skedaddle.  I just wish it would happen a bit quicker.  These first couple of weeks of October has been brutal. 100+ degree temperatures and those pestering blood suckers are still wreaking havoc on my legs, arms, neck, and any piece of exposed flesh.  The sun is setting earlier at least, which gives me a small sense of Autumn.

During October, the Inland Empire’s best kept secret comes to life!  Christmas World at Patio World is emerging at our Riverside location.  For over 40 years, we have been converting half of Patio World into Christmas World.  An extraordinary Christmas wonderland full of trees, one-of-a-kind ornaments, wreaths, lights, garlands, accessories, and more.  We hope to see you here!

Christmas World will be open at the end of this month.

Season’s Greetings!

(WBR) Wayne’s Book Review

My New Year’s Resolution / Goal for the year is to read one book a month.  And aren’t you lucky – You get a rare glimpse into the mind of Wayne Romain and his take on said book.  Just so you know, I’m not a reader.  In the last 10 years, I have probably read six or seven books at the most.  No literary giant here, but like a lot of things in life, you get outside your element, do things you don’t normally do, and you might learn something.

What does this have to do with the outdoors?  Maybe nothing.  Maybe a lot. But it does represent another pastime that we can enjoy (or muddle through) in The Outdoors.

This month’s book:

Dove

by Robin Lee Graham (1991)

Book Overview

In 1965, 16-year-old Robin Lee Graham began a solo around-the-world voyage from San Pedro, California, in a 24-foot sloop. Five years and 33,000 miles later, he returned to home port with a wife and daughter and enough extraordinary experiences to fill this bestselling book, Dove.   (Attribution:Thriftbooks )

The story is a compelling one and while the different adventures and misadventures told throughout the book makes for an entertaining read, for some reason, the book did not “grab” me the way others have.  The more books I ready (I know it’s only like #8 or 9 now), the more critical I may be becoming.  Kinda like a bad TV show, you know when it’s bad.  It just doesn’t feel right. Not that I’m saying this one was bad, just mediocre.

What does stand out to me is Robin’s love of the southern Pacific.  His description of the people, the islands, and where he met his future wife did make me reflect on my youth.  Adventure, naivety, love; all blossoming throught the eyes of a young adult did bring back some recollections of my own youth.  Simpler time, and thoughts.  About how we viewed the world as working instead of how it should work.  A “Disneyland” of perfect ideals, in an imperfect place.

Growing up is so hard to do.  When your young, you can’t wait to grow up.  When older, you wish you would have done things differently in your youth.  And when you’re really old, you wish you could be young, not mattering about making the same dumb mistakes again… But I digress.

That’s what I like about reading books though: Good, Bad, or Mediocre, they do offer opportunities of thought in your own life. (Another thing I should have started earlier/done in my youth).

On a scale of 1-10, I’d give it a 5.

Note: This is my unprofessional, biased, informal review. I make no claims and receive no money or support for my reviews.  It’s just an extrapolation from the mind of WR.
